Description

Brain-imaging research found that in ADHD, the brain's self-management (prefrontal) regions develop along the normal trajectory — roughly two to three years later. This MicroSim makes that finding explorable. Two curves show percent-developed from age 4 to 25: gray for typical development, orange for the ADHD trajectory. Drag the age slider and the infobox reads out both values plus the gap in plain terms: "At age 8, ADHD: about what a typical 5-6 year old has."

The demand line checkbox overlays what the environment expects at each age (sit still at 5, homework alone at 10, run your own schedule at 18). The shaded area where demands exceed the orange curve is the struggle zone — and the three clickable markers (school entry, middle school, college) explain why crises cluster at those ages.

The curves are illustrative of the published trajectory shape, not clinical measurements of any individual.

Lesson Plan

  1. Read (3 min): Set the cursor to the age of a child you know. Read all three numbers aloud.
  2. Interpret (3 min): Discuss the sentence "expecting age-typical self-control is billing for hardware that isn't installed yet."
  3. Overlay (4 min): Turn on the demand line. Click each milestone marker. Ask: where is the struggle zone widest, and what does that predict?
  4. Extend (2 min): Note where the curves converge. Discuss what remains different in adulthood and why ADHD is a lifespan condition.
